If there’s something more satisfying than cooking dessert in the microwave, I don’t know what it is. Nuking food is just fun! And amongst the best microwave treats out there, you’ll find mug brownies.
No, this is no regular mug cake, but an authentic fudgy brownie with the most decadent chocolate flavors and heartwarming sweetness. This is the real deal, so don’t think for a second they won’t taste like traditional brownies — they will!
What’s the deal with mug brownies? For starters, these are perfect midnight snacks and quick & easy sweet treats to enjoy when no one’s watching. Here’s how to make keto mug brownies!
What You’ll Need
To make perfect mug cake brownies, you need a mug and a microwave, of course, and a few easy-to-find ingredients. Before I tell you all about them, know that you should never mix mug cakes and mug brownies in the mug itself — there’s just no room to incorporate everything together! Use a mixing bowl instead.
For your new favorite almost instant dessert, you’ll need almond flour to give the brownie the right texture, your favorite keto friendly sweetener and a pinch of salt.
The brownie’s chocolate flavor come from cocoa powder and a spoonful of chocolate chips — they melt beautifully! And that’s the fudgy part we all love. You’ll also need milk, butter and vanilla extract.
I promise it will take you two minutes to put together the ingredients, and the microwave will do the rest. The recipe below works for one mug because you know this is the type of brownie you make for yourself when all alone and getting ready to catch up on those Netflix series. Still, make as many mug brownies as you want for your friends and family.
Variations and Substitutions
You know it. Brownies are about customization, and that’s part of what makes them so much fun! That applies to mug brownies as well. Here are a few ideas to take your mug brownies to the next level.
Add some crushed walnuts to give each spoonful a lovely crunch. Nuts also give brownies a high-end feel, even when cooked in the microwave.
You might not know this, but chocolate and oranges and beautifully compatible, so for a summery mug brownie, add half a teaspoon of orange zest to the mix. You’ll absolutely love the combination.
Serve your brownies with a scoop of sugar-free vanilla ice cream and drizzle it with melted dark chocolate for an authentic sundae. Serve the brownie still warm and watch the ice cream melt marvelously!

Make this beauty every time you need a mood-booster; if something is particularly true with desserts served in a mug, it is that they always bring a smile to your face!
- 4 tbsp. almond flour
- 4 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tbsp. Swerve (or 4 tbsp. erythritol)
- pinch of salt
- 6 tbsp. milk
- 2 tbsp. butter, softened
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp. dark chocolate chips
- In a mixing bowl (not in the mug!), combine the almond flour, cocoa powder, sweetener and salt.
- Add the milk, butter, vanilla and chocolate chips. Stir to make a batter and transfer it into a mug. Leave enough space, as the brownie might rise a little.
- Microwave at high intensity for 1 minute, check if the brownie’s center is cooked through with a wood pick. If not, microwave for 30 seconds and repeat until the wood pick comes out clean. Enjoy!
